Regionals

This past weekend, Firebird headed to Ontario Regionals in Waterloo to qualify for the Canadian National Championships in mid-August. The bird had some ups and downs, injuries and big plays that ended with a qualifying win in the very last possible game over Toronto's Too Bad.

Firebird went 4-4 for the weekend, beating rivals Grant Trunk, Roy, Too Bad (X2), and coming a couple points shy of beating new Eastern Powerhouse, Maverick from Waterloo.

Heading into Nationals with a bigger, healthier roster and an unrelenting focus should show Firebird upsetting some big names and surprising many.

No Borders

This past weekend, Firebird turned some heads at Ottawa's annual competitive tournament. Going 4-0 in pool play with convincing wins in each game.

Bird squared off in a big crossover vs. the Team Canada U20 East boys. Coming out strong from the first point, Firebird's D-line started with a couple early breaks with great acrobatic catches from star player Mat Berg making his season debut with the team. The O line ran smoothly, scoring points quickly and effeciantly through several plays called on the line. Rob Ainsworth, Colin Froats, and Hagan Riglin kept the disc alive in the backfield as much as needed, while Mat Goodkey and Aaron Kucherawy had some chemistry going exchanging hucks for scores. Speedster Scott Higgins lit of the field as always getting open at will. With a 5 game day, Firebird seemed to start to run out of gas and give a few easy points up near the very end of the game, but hard cap came and the game finished 12-11 in the Bird's favour, earning a place in Quarters on Sunday, and a game against Brother team, Phoenix.

In the Quarter final game against Phoenix, Firebird came out strong, converting on Offense and breaking on defence. points were traded with a break on each side up until 5-5. Phoenix's D line converted some of Firebird's offensive turns to take half 8-5. In the second half, Firebird put together some breaks of their own and made it a game, before Phoenix eventually pulled away to win 15-11.

A tired Firebird took on a tired Red circus in the next game, and came out on the losing end, after keeping it close in the first half. Some injuries during this game lowered the roster number down significantly.

In the end, Firebird finishes tied for 7th.
